Spring is finally here! Longer days and warmer weather invite us to get outside, take walks in the neighborhood, tend the garden, and enjoy community activities. For many older adults, being active and connected is key to feeling well and staying healthy.
At the same time, spring brings a few challenges that are worth keeping in mind to help prevent falls.

Spring brings new hazards
As snow melts and weather changes, outdoor spaces can become less predictable.

You may notice:
• Cracked or uneven sidewalks
• Wet or slippery surfaces after rain
• Limited lighting in parks or pathways
• Gardening hazards like hoses, tools, and uneven ground
• Switching too quickly to less supportive footwear
Spending more time outdoors is wonderful, but it also increases exposure to these risks.

Staying active at your own pace
Physical activity is important at every age, and spring is a great time to get moving again. The key is to go slowly and listen to your body.

A few helpful tips:
• Start with short walks and build up gradually
• Choose familiar, well maintained routes
• Take your time — there’s no need to rush
• Continue using canes or walking poles if you need them
• Wear comfortable, supportive, non slip shoes
At community events or busy public spaces, remain aware of your surroundings, as crowds and distractions can hide tripping hazards.

Small steps, big impact
Preventing falls often comes down to everyday habits.
At home
• Keep entrances and walkways clear
• Ensure good lighting, especially on stairs
• Store frequently used items within easy reach
Outside
• Watch for cracks, curbs, and uneven ground
• Avoid very slippery surfaces when possible
• Take breaks when you feel tired
For your health
• Keep up with balance and strength exercises
• Have your vision and hearing checked regularly
• Talk to a healthcare provider if medications cause dizziness

A shared community effort
Many communities offer fall prevention programs, exercise classes, and workshops designed for older adults. Taking part can improve confidence, balance, and overall well being — while also helping people stay socially connected.

Enjoy spring with confidence
Spring is a time for fresh air, movement, and connection. With awareness and a few simple precautions, everyone can enjoy the season safely.
Stay active, stay connected — and stay safe.
